VMware UEM – Unable to browse AD groups in Conditions and Condition Sets

Within VMware UEM you are able to filter out settings based on conditions. These condition can be set directly on the config or by creating a condition set and attach the condition set on the config. Some examples of conditions are Endpoint IP Address, Environment Variables, Group Membership, IP Address and a lot more.

Problem

At a customer we experienced a very strange problem. Once starting the VMware UEM Management console and changing or creating a condition or condition set. We were not able to browse the AD when selecting the condition Group Membership. The browse button was grayed out and we got the following message: Browsing for groups is only available on domain-joined computers. So the strange part is: The machine is domain joined.

Horizon DaaS: Unable to start VMware UAG

The VMware Unified Access Gateway (UAG) is a virtual appliance primarily used to allow secure external access to your organization’s applications. These application can be native windows applications, software as a service (SaaS) applications, and desktops. VMware UAG is typically deployed in a DMZ. For more information see: https://docs.vmware.com/en/Unified-Access-Gateway/index.html

Problem

A while ago a customer had an issue with deploying the VMware Unified Access Gateway. The customer imported the OVA and did the necessary config to deploy the OVA. Once installed the OVA didn’t start and came back with a strange error message:

Cannot initialize property ‘gateway2’. Network ‘DAAS-01_BE’ has no associated network protocol profile.

User got stuck during Citrix logon process

The problem

Last week we got a call from a customer saying that one user is logging on for more than one hour. To confirm what was happening we opened the Citrix Director. We searched for the specific user and found the session status on Logging On. When opening the Citrix Studio we found the user session as active but the user isn’t active at all. When opening the specific server we couldn’t find the user under task manager users. Under processes in the task manager we could find only one process for that specific user, Powershell.exe. Powershell got stuck during execution of the logon script. Continue Reading

How to cancel a Citrix Scheduled Reboot Cycle

Within a banking company I got the question if it is possible to cancel the daily schedule reboot. Sometimes employees need to work during the scheduled reboot. So they want the ability to cancel this reboot. To understand how the Citrix Scheduled Reboot was working I went online and found a very good blog post at the Citrix website. Reboot Schedule Internals This post Andrew Ogle explains how these schedules operate in the 7.x products. This was a real eye opener. However this post was not explaining on how to cancel a Citrix Scheduled Reboot Cycle. So in this post I will explain how to cancel an active schedule reboot cycle. About me

My name is Niels Geursen and I work as an IT Architect.

I started my career in the year 2000. I learned about IT challenges from small to enterprise companies in the past years. In all these years I also got the opportunity to educate myself by following courses and doing exams for Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware. This led to the following certification: VCAP Desktop Management Design 2023, MCSE 2012, CCE-V, VCP6-DTM, and much more.

In June 2019 I was included in the vExpert program of VMware which was renewed ever since. I was also added to the vExpert sub-program EUC.

My experience mainly focuses on end-user computing this could be on-premises or in the cloud.

I hope you have fun reading my Blog!

Slow application start times VMware UEM and App-V

When users need to wait for 60 seconds until they can interact with the application the user experience is impacted. We encountered this behaviour at a costumer and needed to troubleshoot this.

To read more on how I found the problem by excluding antivirus and group policy settings see my guest blog post at Logit Blog

App-V 5.0 registry import not working using dynamic config

A few weeks ago I called my colleague Ryan Bijkerk of www.logitblog.com with the question can VDI tuning break App-V? This inspired him to write a nice article on how performance optimization van break App-V which can be found here.

Within our company we are using VDI for desktops and App-V 5.0 for application virtualization.  Also we did some performance tuning on the VDI’s. Everything was working fine until we we got an App-V application with a registry import via the DynamicConfiguration.xml. First I thought this was an issue with one of the settings we did with the performance tuning maybe we disabled a services that was needed. This was the reason for my call with Ryan.

So I started my troubleshooting by enabling the disabled services without any luck. The registry import was still not working. So I started Googling and I came a cross the following site http://www.app-v.info which let me to the Blog of Trentent. His blog provide the solution by setting the following value:

Registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\AppV\Subsystem key:
Value: NoBackgroundRegistryStaging
Data Type: DWORD
Data: 0

You can read the full article here about the the registry value.

Generic USB devices XenDesktop 7.6

USB devices are automatically redirected when USB support is enabled, and the USB user preference settings are set to automatically connect USB devices.

In Receiver for Windows 4.2, USB devices are also automatically redirected when operating in Desktop Appliance mode, and the connection bar is not present. In earlier versions of Receiver for Windows, USB devices are also automatically redirected when operating in a desktop appliance mode or with Virtual Machine (VM) hosted applications.

However, it is not always best to redirect all USB devices.

PowerShell 3.0 stopped working!?

In a Citrix XenApp 6.0 environment I use a lot of powershell scripts to get things going. For example during logon of a user some scripts are used to copy program settings to the user profile. Under PowerShell 2.0 everything went fine.

After the release of PowerShell 3.0 we updated the environment with the latest version of PowerShell including the required full installation of Microsoft .NET Framework 4. Everything worked out great. All the scripts worked. Until a week ago. Continue Reading
